We’ve been sweltering for the past few days in some seriously awful heat and humidity. I’m so glad that last night we had thunderstorms and this morning when I was walking to the car with Katie it felt really nice and cool!
I updated my ipod with some new music last night and I’m pretty pleased with my new playlists. I created one especially for a character who I’m currently working on revising a story about. The original story was written as a Nano a few years backand I think I’m finally ready to work on gutting it of the extra nano junk and revising it into something a bit more… decent!
I spent a long time last night building some more internal structure in my brain for it. I talked lots of ideas over with Katie to figure out what I was really going for and then I tried to work on a Dragon for the story. I use Dragon here in the metaphorical sense. A friend of ours, Kate, has been working on a novel and during her Masters Thesis defense they told her that she needed a Dragon for her novel. A Dragon is a central problem that the story kind of revolves around. In her case the Dragon was a farm that was going to foreclose.
My story has a good base, I have a character, Luca, who has just come out to his parents and they turned around and threw him out. So the story figures around how he deals with that and what “family” really is. Right now I’m wrestling with trying to make his parents more realistic and how to depict them as human without them actually showing up in the story for most of it.
I made a page or so of notes last night and I think what I would like to do is map the story out a little bit more. Maybe make up index cards of significant events and arrange them so I can really LOOK at the story.
As always there are a million other things I OUGHT to be doing, like preparing for the convention we’re going to in under a month, but this has seized hold of my brain. We’ll see how things go.
Till then I’m going to be listening to my playlist over and over again and hoping that it kicks off some more ideas.
